WHAT'S NEW: The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the nation s leading voice for women and girls. Since our founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and
taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day educational, social, economic, and political. AAUW advances the equity for all women and girls through
advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. We have been empowering women as individuals and as a community. For more than 130 years, we have worked together
as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families.
AAUW has more than 170,000 members and 1,300 branches across the United States, as well as 800 college/university partners. The Association has influenced
legislative debate on critical issues such as education, sex discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, affirmative action, Title IX, welfare reform,
vocational education, pay equity and medical leave, and health care reform. More than $4 million is awarded in fellowships and grants to support over 250 women
in their professional and academic careers. AAUW is actually two separate not-for-profit corporations: AAUW or the National organization and the AAUW Funds includng the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. AAUW is a 501(c) (4) not-for-profit advocacy group. Donations are not tax deductible, although memberships may be tax deductible as a business expense. AAUW Funds is a 501(C)(3) charitable organization and, as such, donations to AAUW Funds are tax deductible. It is the nation's oldest and one of the largest
single sources of non-institutional funding of graduate education for women. In recent years, over $4.5 million has been awarded annually. The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, commonly known as LAF, is also a part of the 501(c)(3) charitable organization and, as such, donations to LAF are tax deductible.
LAF, established in 1981, provides financial and emotional support for women in academia seeking redress in the judicial system for sex discrimination. It is the
largest legal fund focused solely on this objective. AAUW California was formed in 1920 and is California's most active and diverse organization for women offering action for equity, personal and
professional growth, community leadership and friendship. At the state level, AAUW provides legislative support and guidance to state lawmaking bodies. We have revisited our Branch Bylaws
and you may read them here. |
